This happens most of the time when we decide to combine one or even more nouns or sometimes adjectives to form a new word.

One of these new words that recently appearead in the german news is: der Gasstreit

Let’s have a look in today’s news:

The new noun Gasstreit was formed by the nouns das Gas = gas and der Streit = conflict.

Other nouns that occur in the news about this conflict are die Gaslieferung = delivery of gas or die Transitlieferung = transit delivery

So the new nouns describe the conflict between Russia and Ukraine about the correct delivery of the russian gas to the European Union. Russia blaims Ukraine that it steals gas on its way to the european customers, because there is still the first Gasstreit in which Russia claims Ukraine to pay their depts to Gazprom.

What would be the other options to saying der Gasstreit?

der Gasstreit = der Streit um das Gas

die Gaslieferung = die Lieferung von Gas

die Transitlieferung = die Lieferung nach Europa durch die Ukraine
